Confidence for Secondary English at LK Academy

Looking for secondary English tuition that helps your child understand what they are learning and how to apply it confidently?

At LK Academy, our Confidence for Secondary English programme supports students from Secondary 1 to Secondary 4. We strengthen comprehension, essay writing, language accuracy and oral communication while developing the thinking skills needed for school assessments and national examinations.

At both our centres in Serangoon Gardens and Yishun, we help students navigate the transition from primary to secondary English and progress towards the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) examinations.

Socio-emotional learning is woven into our programme. Through discussions, reflection and meaningful language tasks, students learn to understand emotions, consider different perspectives and communicate respectfully. These skills support their growth as learners while adding depth to their writing and oral responses.

Our approach combines academic capability, social confidence and personal growth — helping students improve their English and take ownership of their learning.

SEC English Tuition: Understanding the Changes from 2027

From 2027, the SEC replaces Singapore's separate GCE O-Level and N-Level examinations. Under Full Subject-Based Banding, students take English at G1, G2 or G3.

  • G3 English corresponds to the previous O-Level English standard.
  • G2 English corresponds to the previous N(A)-Level English standard.
  • G1 English corresponds to the previous N(T)-Level English standard.

For parents familiar with O-Level English tuition, G3 is the corresponding subject level under the new SEC qualification.

Strong writing, comprehension and communication skills remain essential. Our secondary English lessons develop these foundations, with preparation guided by the requirements of the student's English subject level.

Helping Your Child Overcome Common Difficulties in Secondary English

Secondary English requires students to interpret meaning, explain their thinking and communicate with greater precision.

At LK Academy, we guide students to:

  • Understand what a question requires before answering.
  • Support comprehension answers with relevant evidence.
  • Develop essay ideas beyond brief or repetitive points.
  • Organise writing clearly and use an appropriate tone.
  • Explain opinions confidently during oral discussions.
  • Recognise recurring mistakes and use feedback to improve.

Through guided practice and constructive feedback, students build the skills and confidence to approach unfamiliar tasks.

We also help students recognise frustration, manage setbacks and ask for support. As they learn to respond to mistakes constructively, they develop the resilience to keep trying and the self-awareness to understand how they learn.

What Our Secondary English Tuition Covers

Click on the boxes below to learn more:

English Comprehension and Summary Writing

We help students understand challenging passages and produce relevant, precise answers.

Lessons develop visual text analysis, inference, vocabulary in context and understanding of language effects. Students learn to identify evidence and explain how it supports their answers.

Where required by their syllabus, summary writing practice develops the ability to select key points, paraphrase accurately and write concisely within the word limit.

By exploring characters' emotions, motivations and choices, students also practise perspective-taking. They learn to distinguish what a text tells them from their own assumptions—strengthening both comprehension and empathy.

Secondary English Composition and Essay Writing

Our writing lessons help students turn ideas into well-developed, coherent essays.

Students practise narrative, personal recount, argumentative and discursive writing where appropriate to their level. We teach planning, paragraph development, supporting examples and effective introductions and conclusions.

Current affairs and wider reading enrich students' ideas, helping them write with greater depth and awareness.

Students examine relationships, decisions and consequences through writing. This encourages emotional awareness in narratives and personal recounts, as well as thoughtful consideration of different viewpoints in argumentative and discursive essays.

Situational Writing

Students learn to adapt their writing to its purpose, audience and context.

We guide them to select relevant information, organise their response and use an appropriate tone and format. Practice strengthens effective communication through tasks such as letters, emails and other formats required by their syllabus.

Considering how a message may affect its reader also develops social awareness. Students practise expressing concerns, making requests and persuading others with clarity, sensitivity and respect.

Grammar, Vocabulary and Editing

Students strengthen sentence construction, grammar and vocabulary through application.

Editing and proofreading teach them to spot errors, apply language rules and review their own work carefully. We encourage accurate, purposeful expression rather than using difficult words without understanding them.

English Oral Examination and Listening Skills

Our oral practice helps students organise their thoughts, develop opinions and support their responses with examples.

Students learn to draw on personal experiences and wider issues, listen attentively and participate thoughtfully in discussion. We build clarity, fluency and the confidence to communicate beyond the classroom.

Discussions also teach students to acknowledge different opinions, disagree respectfully and respond with empathy. They learn that confident communication involves both expressing themselves and listening to others.

Sec 1 to Sec 4 English Tuition: A Clear Learning Progression

Sec 1 English Tuition — A Strong Start to Secondary School

The transition from PSLE English to secondary English brings longer texts, more demanding questions and new writing expectations.

We help students establish strong foundations in comprehension, writing, grammar and oral communication while developing effective learning habits.

As students adjust to a new school environment, we encourage them to ask questions, express uncertainty and build confidence in participating.

Sec 2 English Tuition — Deeper Understanding and Stronger Expression

Students refine inference, summary and essay writing skills. Lessons encourage more detailed explanations, clearer organisation and greater independence in applying feedback.

Through reading and discussion, students develop greater awareness of themselves and others, learning to consider different perspectives and communicate thoughtfully.

Sec 3 English Tuition — Building Upper Secondary Readiness

Our upper secondary lessons strengthen critical reading, developed essays and oral responses. Students practise applying strategies to more challenging tasks while addressing gaps in their English foundations.

We encourage students to set meaningful learning goals, reflect on their progress and persevere when tasks become more demanding.

Sec 4 English Tuition — Focused SEC Examination Preparation

Focused revision, examination-style tasks and timed practice help students improve accuracy and manage their time.

Students learn to recognise question requirements, strengthen weaker components and apply their skills consistently as they prepare for the SEC English examinations.

Alongside examination preparation, we reinforce constructive responses to setbacks, help students focus on manageable improvements and encourage them to seek support when needed.

Our Methodology: Three Pillars Behind Every Lesson

At LK Academy, our Secondary English programme is guided by Academic Capability, Social Confidence and Personal Growth. These three pillars shape how we teach, guide practice and provide feedback, helping students strengthen their English while developing the confidence and independence to apply what they learn.

Academic Capability

Building understanding and the skills to apply it.

We teach students to analyse texts, interpret questions, organise ideas and communicate with precision. Through teacher modelling, guided practice and constructive feedback, students learn how to develop stronger comprehension answers, coherent essays and thoughtful oral responses. We encourage students to understand why a strategy works so they can apply it to unfamiliar tasks.

Social Confidence

Helping students express themselves and engage with others.

Students practise sharing opinions, asking questions and explaining their reasoning in a supportive environment. Discussions and oral activities develop clear expression, active listening and the ability to consider different viewpoints. These experiences help students communicate with greater confidence and adapt their language to different audiences and situations.

Personal Growth

Developing resilience and ownership of learning.

We guide students to recognise their strengths, identify areas for improvement and respond constructively to feedback. Reviewing mistakes, refining their work and reflecting on progress help them develop effective learning habits. As tasks become more demanding, students learn to persevere, seek support and take greater responsibility for their learning.

Emotional Intelligence Woven Throughout

Emotional intelligence connects all three pillars. Through reading, writing and discussion, students explore emotions, relationships and the consequences of choices. They practise perspective-taking, respectful disagreement and managing frustration when learning is challenging. This brings greater maturity to their English responses while supporting their personal development throughout secondary school.

Why Choose LK Academy for Secondary English Tuition?

Clear Strategies for Academic Progress

We teach students how to approach each task, explain their reasoning and improve their responses. Learning becomes more purposeful when students understand why a strategy works.

Confidence in Writing and Speaking

Students receive opportunities to express ideas, ask questions and practise challenging skills in a supportive learning environment.

A Balance of IQ and EQ

Alongside English skills, we develop perseverance, self-awareness and responsibility. Students learn to respond constructively to feedback and recognise the effort behind improvement.

Socio-Emotional Learning Through English

Our programme connects language learning with the experiences and challenges of adolescence. Texts, writing tasks and discussions provide opportunities to explore emotions, relationships, choices and social issues.

We guide students to develop:

  • Self-awareness: Recognising their emotions, strengths and areas for growth.
  • Self-management: Responding to frustration and approaching challenges with perseverance.
  • Social awareness: Understanding others' feelings and considering different perspectives.
  • Relationship skills: Listening actively, expressing themselves clearly and disagreeing respectfully.
  • Responsible decision-making: Considering consequences and explaining thoughtful choices.

These skills help students bring greater maturity to their English responses while supporting their relationships, learning habits and personal growth.

Support Through the Secondary School Journey

From adjusting to Secondary 1 to preparing for national examinations, our programme builds skills progressively as students' learning demands increase.

Jayden Foo testimonial LK Academy
"I have been in LoveKids and LK Academy since I was in Primary Three. Being here for such a long time, and now that I am secondary 3, I feel that I have really grown close to the teachers here. I can still remember my first ever lesson here when I wrote a composition. I can still remember the EQ skills taught, the confidence we have gained and the extra vocabulary extracted from the 6 years that I have been here. I am forever grateful for the fun and unique lessons taught to me and I hope for more to come."

Charlene Yeo testimonial LK Academy"When I was in Primary School, we did performances annually after every exam. Being on stage in front of all parents and teachers was nerve-wracking. Because of this, I used to always have mind blocks in the middle of those performances. However, as time went by, I eventually overcame my fear of talking in front of many people and am now able to talk loudly and confidently to big groups of people. All thanks to the teachers at LoveKids! Despite me being somewhat stubborn and difficult, they were always super patient, encouraging and never gave up on me. Sometimes, they even stay back with me to revise for English exams. I would not have been able to come this far without them."

Xenia Chye testimonial LK Academy"This programme has benefitted me a lot ever since I joined back in 2014. I joined because I had always struggled with English, especially writing compositions. At first, it was pretty tough because of having to fit in the new environment, as well as getting used to the new teaching methods, but I eventually pushed through and the outcome was definitely worth it. Not only did the classes and programmes (boot camps) help me build more confidence in speaking and doing work, I also improved academically. I went from scoring Cs or even Ds to B4-B3 and now A2. Hence, I would like to thank all the teachers who have helped me come this far to where I am. For those planning to sign your children up for their programmes, give it a go! :)"
